Boldly painted in the center with the arms of Clarke possibly for Goerge Clarke, Lt. Governor of New York, flanked by foliage, the flat rim with grisaille, iron-red and gilt trailing berried vine

Lot Essay

George Clarke was appointed Secretary of the Province of New York in 1703 and Lt. Governor in 1736, returning to England in 1745. He married Anne Hyde, daughter of the Governor of North Carolina. See D.S. Howard, op. cit., where the author notes that "this service may first have been used in New York."
