Lot Essay

The present work dates from circa 1760 and is stylistically comparable to Wright's series of portraits of the Wilmot children (see B. Nicholson, Joseph Wright of Derby, London, 1968, I, pp. 225-6, nos. 142-7; II, plates 9-15).
