Lot Essay

The present composition is a variant of one of a series depicting The Four Elements that Lancret painted for one of his most important patrons, Henri Camille, Marquis de Beringhen.

The 1994 Sotheby's sale catalogue states that 'Mary Taverner Holmes had seen the present work first hand and believed the painting to be by Lancret.
