Lot Essay

The composition derives from that of the painting by Carracci formerly in the chapel of the Palazzo Franese, Rome, and known today through engravings and old copies, including that in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dijon. The present work varies in its inclusion of the Apostle Peter behind Christ.
