Lot Essay

This distinctive form of Caernarvonshire (including Anglesey) food cupboard typically has the ventilation panels composed of either turned spindles or pierced motifs. The use of interlaced fretting in this example is the most common form, often appearing as fretted decoration along the upper shelf frieze of dressers from this region. Cupboards of this type are typically made with fronts pf pale, imported central European Oak and the sides of white pine, which is a feature of many dressers from this area. The doors have decorative mouldings of mahogany and fruitwood and the lozenge shaped rosewood inlays in the frieze are a common motif of this region's furniture.
