The Canterbury: with four open compartments above a drawer, on square tapering legs and brass caps and castors.
The Armchair: the oval back with pierced splat with trailing husk and swags, above a seat covered with yellow material, on fluted turned tapering legs, inscribed in pencil 'S-Simmons Esqr', the upper half of the back and the splat later

Lot Essay

This form of Roman-medallion chair-back and ornament of bacchic veil-drapery was popularised by A. Hepplewhite and Co. in their Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788. The same back features on a pair of chairs offered anonymously at Castellana, Madrid, 2 October 1998, lot 1043.
