BURNEY, Fanny (Madame d'Arblay, 1752-1840). The Wanderer: or Female Difficulties. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1814.
5 volumes, 12° (176 x 104mm). (Vol. I lacks C6-7, occasional neat marginal repairs, one with loss of letter, some spotting and staining.) Contemporary red half morocco, red speckled edges (rebacked), red calf-backed slipcase. Provenance: presentation copy from the author (verso of half-title in volume I inscribed 'For my dear sister Sarah from the Author') -- purchased from Raphael King, London, 7 July 1953, £35.
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY TO THE AUTHOR'S HALF-SISTER, SARAH (?1770-1844), herself a novelist. The Wanderer was Burney's last novel and with her earlier, better known works, Evelina and Cecilia, provided a model for the next generation of women writers, including Maria Edgeworth and Jane Austen who writes of Miss Burney in Northanger Abbey.
