POPE, Alexander, translator (1688-1744) -- HOMER. The Iliad. London: W. Bowyer for Bernard Lintott, 1715-1720. 6 volumes in 3, 2° (367 x 227mm). Map and two leaves of plates. Extra-illustrated with 49 engraved plates by Vleughels and Dipenbecke, with dedications to the nobility of Great Britain. ( Vol. I lacks half-title and privilege leaf, preliminary sections misbound, one plate repaired at corner.) (Some spotting and browning). Contemporary stained calf, red speckled edges (rubbed and scuffed, joints splitting). Provenance: details of printing arrangements made by Pope given on front blank in an early hand -- Viscount Falmouth, Mereworth Castle (bookplate) -- John Waynflete Carter (bookplate). FIRST FOLIO EDITION. By the contract signed with Lintot on 23 March 1714, Pope received 250 guineas per volume for his translation, and, in addition, 750 quarto copies for distribution to subscribers; in return, Lintot held the copyright, following Pope's quarto with his own folio edition, the more conventional size for grand works.
