BROWNING, R. The Poetical Works ... fourth edition. London: Chapman and Hall, 1865. 3 volumes, 8° (161 x 100mm). Mounted photographic frontispiece portrait. (Without half-title to vols. II-III.) Contemporary red half morocco by Gardiner & Son, with labels at rear (worn, all spines and two covers detached), cloth case with morocco-backed chemise. Provenance: PRESENTATION COPY from Robert Browning to Julia Frances Wedgwood (1833-1913, half-title to vol. I inscribed 'Miss Wedgwood from Robert Browning April 17 '65') -- by descent to Mary Mosley, sold Parke-Bernet, New York, 21 November 1938, part lot 37. Reprint of the 1863 'second collected edition'. Broughton A258; cf. Wise Browning Collected Editions 2.

BROWNING, R. The Ring and the Book. London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1868-1869. 4 volumes, 8° (170 x 113mm). Uncut in original green cloth (spine of vol. I torn with loss, upper cover detached, spines of vols. II-III torn at head). Provenance: ASSOCIATION COPY, with note by Mary Mosley, dated 6 Cranley Mansions, 5.5.[19]37, stating that it was sent by Robert Browning to Julia Wedgwood ('these volumes of the 'Ring & the Book' came from the library of my aunt, the late Miss Julia Frances Wedgwood, & were sent to her as a present by Robert Browning & are the volumes referred to by Robert Browning in his letters to her') -- sold Parke-Bernet, New York, 21 November 1938, part lot 37. FIRST EDITION. Julia Wedgwood was probably the first person to read Robert's poem. Despite the rupture to their friendship three years earlier, he sent Julia proofs of volumes I-II on November 5, 1868, and a fervent discussion of the poem followed by letter. However, as the present volumes are not proof copies, they were presumably sent to her at a slightly later stage. Broughton A73; Wise Browning 12. (8)
