BROWNING, Robert (1812-1889) -- John FORSTER (1812-1876). Arrest of the Five Members by Charles the First. London: John Murray, 1860. 8° (199 x 120mm). Uncut in original cloth (spine worn, front inner hinges split). Provenance: PRESENTATION COPY to Robert Browning (half-title inscribed: 'The author to his old friend Robert Browning, May 1860') -- R.W. Barrett Browning, his sale, Sotheby's, 6 May 1913, lot 693, to Maggs for £3 15s. FIRST EDITION. Robert Browning was in Rome at the date of this inscription. Forster gave him early critical acclaim, and later in life assumed a right to have the poet dine with him every Sunday.

Contemporary red half morocco by Gardiner & Son, with labels at rear (worn, all spines and two covers detached), cloth case with morocco-backed chemise. Provenance: PRESENTATION COPY from Robert Browning to Julia Frances Wedgwood (1833-1913, half-title to vol. I inscribed 'Miss Wedgwood from Robert Browning April 17 '65') -- by descent to Mary Mosley, sold Parke-Bernet, New York, 21 November 1938, part lot 37. I torn with loss, upper cover detached, spines of vols. II-III torn at head). Provenance: ASSOCIATION COPY, with note by Mary Mosley, dated 6 Cranley Mansions, 5.5.[19]37, stating that it was sent by Robert Browning to Julia Wedgwood ('these volumes of the 'Ring & the Book' came from the library of my aunt, the late Miss Julia Frances Wedgwood, & were sent to her as a present by Robert Browning & are the volumes referred to by Robert Browning in his letters to her') -- sold Parke-Bernet, New York, 21 November 1938, part lot 37. FIRST EDITION. Julia Wedgwood was probably the first person to read Robert's poem. Despite the rupture to their friendship three years earlier, he sent Julia proofs of volumes I-II on November 5, 1868, and a fervent discussion of the poem followed by letter.
