Original vellum gilt by Matthew Bell, boards and spine decorated with gilt prunus panels, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut (vellum lightly marked, boards slightly bowed, corners rubbed). Provenance: Oscar Wilde (autograph inscription on half-title 'Oscar Wilde , 34. York Street , Jan[uar]y. 7. 84')--'Philip' (portion of inscription on front free endpaper, remainder bleached out)--John Batterson Stetson, Jr (1884-1952, U.S. Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Finland and then Poland, booklabel on upper pastedown)-- purchased from Rosenbach 15 November 1943. Exhibited: Grolier Club, New York (1950s exhibition label loosely inserted).
SECOND EDITION. WILDE'S OWN COPY OF HIS FIRST VOLUME OF POEMS. The first edition of Wilde's Poems was printed in an edition of 750 copies; of these, 250 were issued as the first edition and the remaining 500 sets of sheets were issued as the second and third editions, each of 250 copies, with new, cancellans preliminary leaves.
