WILDE, Oscar (1854-1900). Autograph letter signed ('Oscar Wilde') to an unidentified recipient [the author E. Nesbit (Mrs Hubert Bland)], Ludgate Hill, London, 21 October 1887, thanking her for agreeing to join the list of contributors [to The Woman's World], following which 'an early copy' of the publication is to be sent to her, and adding that 'A sonnet or short lyric from your pen would be most welcome', the recipient identified by a pencilled annotation at the foot ('To Miss Nisbit'), 2 pages, 8vo, on paper with printed heading of 'La Belle Sauvage, Ludgate Hill'.
An apparently unpublished letter linking Wilde and the author of Five Children and It. E. Nesbit did in fact contribute two poems to The Woman's World: 'The Christmas Roses' in December 1888, and 'The Soul to the Ideal' in July 1889. At this period she would have been known for her volume of verse Lays and Legends, published the previous year; the first of her successful children's books, The Story of the Treasure Seekers, was not published until 1899.
