MOORE, George Augustus (1855-1933). Impressions and Opinions. London: David Nutt, 1891. 12° (174 x 105mm). (A little spotting.) Original blue cloth, spine gilt, green half morocco case. Provenance: Presentation copy from author to Frank Harris (inscribed on title: 'To Frank Harris from his friend George Moore', pencil annotation by Harris on p.57). Exhibited: Grolier Club (exhibition label loosely inserted).
ADVANCE COPY. Gilcher lists this as one of three known advance copies, all inscribed by the author, lettered Essays/George Moore on the spine and with the misprint Author of a Humorous Wife on the title page (p.32, A15 n.2), which led to the edition being recalled. As Harris and Henley, the owner of one of the other two copies, were both journalists, Gilcher concludes that these three copies might have been rushed through for review purposes. The third copy was given to A. Edward Newton. A letter (8°, 1 page) from him to H. Betram Smith describing the copies in his possession is tipped in. ('I have two copies of Impressions and Opinions lettered Essays, each with the error on the title-page and each a presentation copy; one bound in blue cloth, the other in orange cloth.
