Lot Essay

This tapestry is probably inspired by the great success Charles LeBrun's 1660s designs of The Story of Meleager enjoyed, which were initially woven at Maincy, the studios established to decorate Vaux-Le-Vicomte, and later at Gobelins. Weavers throughout the Lowlands either re-used the same designs or commissioned their own. The borders and the coloration of this tapestry would indicate that it very probably was woven at Audenarde.
