The king with a baton in his right hand, his head turned to the left, on a rectangular porphyry and ormolu-mounted base, light brown patina with lighter high points

Lot Essay

This is a reduction of François Girardon's (1628-1715) equestrian portrait of Louis XIV, erected in the Place Louis-le-Grand, Paris, on 13 August 1699 (see M. Martin, Les Monuments Equestres de Louis XIV, Paris, 1986, pp. 92-117). The popularity of this model resulted in several 19th Century reductions by Parisian bronziers such as Beurdeley and Henri Dasson, amongst others.
