Lot Essay

Son of the American expatriate painter Daniel Ridgeway Knight, Louis Aston Knight was born in Paris and studied under Jules Lefèbvre. Beginning in 1894, Knight began exhibiting at the Paris Salon, where his work was met with critical acclaim. A more pure Impressionist than his famous father, Louis Aston Knight was a great admirer of Claude Monet, with whom he enjoyed a friendship, and an affinity for painting en plein air. Knight is best known for his lush French landscapes, often infused with brilliant flowers and colors reminiscent of Monet's gardens in Giverny.

Howard L. Rehs has confirmed the authenticity of this work and will include it in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné.
