Lot Essay
According to C. Payne, Linke furniture bearing the 'Made in France' stamp is often an indication that it was exported to the United States. This was in compliance of the McKinley Tariff Act of 1891, which stipulated that all imports were required to be marked with their country of origin. The stamp is now rarely found on Linke pieces, as over the years it has been removed in an attempt to counter the misconception that a piece marked thus lacked age (see C. Payne, François Linke 1855-1946 - The Belle Epoque of French Furniture, Woodbridge, 2003, p. 175).
