Lot Essay

Henry Rich, 1st Earl of Holland was a courtier and soldier whose looks and charm soon made him a favourite of James I. He was rewarded with titles and on Buckingham's death succeeded as the Chancellor of Cambridge University. But his lack of political accumen brought him fierce criticism in the build up to the Civil War. In 1648 he was defeated at Kingston and the following year he was beheaded with the Duke of Hamilton and Lord Capel.
