Lot Essay

Mary Knowles (1733-1807) well known Quakeress was a witt and beauty, and gained noteriarty and Royal patronage for her embroidered worsted pictures. Her husband died in 1784 leaving her a considerable legacy. She became an intimate of Dr Johnson and was considered by Boswell to be a brilliant conversationalist, publishing many dialogues and tracts.
