Lot Essay

Bewick studied under B. R. Haydon and at the R.A. Schools. He exhibited widely and established successive portrait practises in Darlington, Glasgow and Dublin. He lived in Italy for four years, where he made sketches of the Sistine Chapel for Sir Thomas Lawrence. He returned to England and re-established himself as a portrait painter, his more notable commissions included a portrait of Daniel Maclise R.A.
