Lot Essay

Vereker Monteith Hamilton specialized in miltary paintings. He was the brother of the sitter and the date of this portrait conicides with his brother's appointment as A.D.C. to General Roberts and the engagesment to his wife.
General Sir Ian Standish Monteith Hamilton (1853-1947) was appointed
Comander in Chief of British forces in the Dardanelles in 1915 after he had distinglished himself in many military campaigns. With the disastrous failures at Galliopoli he was relieved of his command and when he retired in 1920 he published a diary of the whole campaign.
