Lot Essay

The Reverend Edward Price Owen purchased William Etty's Venus and her Satellites when it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1835. Nymph and Dancing Faun was also exhibited that year and it has been suggested that the present picture was a gift from the artist to his patron.
