The present work is thought to have been cut from a sketchbook page, possibly from Heads, Figures and Ideas Sketchbook 1956. This drawing is inscribed in pen and ink 'MR/1.2.1956' (lower left) - this is not the artist's hand. Attached beneath the drawing is a fragment of paper inscribed in pen and ink 'To Marko Ristic/and Madame Ristic/with warmest regards/and happy memories/of my visit to Yugoslavia./Henry Moore/Much Hadham. January 1956'.
Moore met Marco Ristic, a Yugloslavian surrealist writer, at his exhibition in the Art Pavillion at Small Kalemegdan in Belgrade during March 1955. Ristic is recorded to have commented how 'the exhibition was a significant manifestation of close cultural ties between the two countries'. (see Politika, Umetnost koja izaziva postovanje [Art which entitles respect], 30th March 1995, translated by L Brozicevic).
