Lot Essay

Patrick Stirling was Chief Engineer of the Great Northern Railways when he designed and built a 4-2-2 express locomotive in 1870. In all 53 locomotives of this type were built, they hauled trains daily from London to York at an average speed of 87 kilometres per hour.
