The elegant, deep blue silk gauze woven with a pattern of foliage and angular scrollwork in roundels, applied with four dragon medallions, worked in counted stitch in silver and gold threads

Lot Essay

Summer clothing made of gauze was donned at court beginning on the first day of the fifth month. This surcoat may be identified as one made for a prince of the first rank, jinwang, as it has front-facing dragons in the roundels front and back, and dragons in profile in the roundels on the shoulders.
