A Lacquered-Iron Sixty-Two Plate Helmet (Suji-Bachi) with a Russet-Iron Half Mask (Mempo)
Edo period (18th century)
The sixty-two plate suji-bachi lacquered black and fitted with a five-stage gilt-copper chrysanthemum tehen-kanamono (decorative ring on the top of the bowl) carved with florets, and a gilt-copper kuwagata-dai (mount for decorative crests) carved with vines and chrysanthemum bosses, the fukikaeshi (turnbacks) and mabisashi (peak) applied with stencilled leather; the bowl fitted with a three-lame solid plate shikoro (neck guard) lacquered black and laced in orange and blue lacing, the maedate (forecrest) a lacquered-wood demon with glass-inlaid eyes; with a russet-iron mempo (half mask) forged with a strong chin and a hinged nose, a plum-blossom boss on the chin, a five-lame solid-plate throat guard lacquered black and attached with stencilled leather (2)
