A Blue and White Porcelain Bottle with Handles
Choson period (19th century)
Rectangular, with flat shoulders with slanted edges and fancifully moulded with two handles in the form of two bushy-tailed squirrels, the large sides of the bottle painted with river landscapes in underglaze-blue, one with a pavilion on a pine-studded cliff, boats, a larger cliff and flying birds and clouds, the opposite landscape with pines on rolling ground between tall, jagged cliffs and below a small sun and wispy clouds at the top, the shoulders painted with two felicitous butterflies, eyes of the squirrels painted in underglaze-blue and their fur rendered by short incised lines, the neck of the vessel also painted in underglaze-blue with slender scrollwork; the whole covered save the base with a glossy transparent glaze with blue cast
