Lot Essay

Joseph Danhauser (1780-1829) was one of the most innovative cabinet makers in Vienna, his designs can be construed as modernist even to this day. This radical innovation in design so typicall of Vienna in the early 19th century sets these pieces apart from their more conventional Biedermeier contemporaries. There are still many of Danhauser's designs extant. He was a prolific draughtsman and his designs influenced many others.
About 2500 of these drawings are still preserved in the Osterreichisches Museum für angewandte Kunst.
A virtually identical chair, model Nr. 21, is in Laxenburg castle in Vienna, cf. Parnass, Sonderheft Möbel, Wien 1998, p. 45.

Bagatelle Château et Trianon, Vienne 1815-1848, Paris, 1990, p. 59, cat. nr. 49.
