Lot Essay

This chair was originally one of a pair. The other was sold by Christopher Howe to the artist Lucian Freud for £500 in 1987. Freud's chair subsequently featured in the celebrated portrait of 'Leigh Bowery (Seated)', executed by Freud in 1990. Bowery (1961-1994) was a man of gargantuan scale physically and culturally, a transvestite performance artist, fetishist designer, leader of the band Minty and theatrical giver of birth.
