Each with arched rectangular back-plate decorated with stylised foliage, two bearing the date '1709' with a tray for two candles beneath, later drilled for electricity

Lot Essay

Identical wall-lights can be seen in the Living room designed by Ernest Gimson for Sidney and Lucy Barnsley's house, Beechanger, Sapperton, Gloucestershire in 1904 (the frontispiece to A Carruthers and M. Greensted, Good Citizen's Furniture The Arts and Crafts collections at Cheltenham, Cheltenham, 1994), as well as in Gimson's own house at Sapperton, illustrated in J. Cooper, Victorian and Edwardian Furniture and Interiors, Hong Kong, 1987, p.192, fig.501.
