8° (172 x 105mm). Folding hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece by J. Gleader after Hopkins, errata leaf bound in at end. (Some slight surface soiling or browning.) Original cloth boards (upper board detached, wear to spine). Provenance: N.H. Battiston (ownership inscription on title, dated 1892).
First edition of Hopkins' account of the discovery and colonisation of Madeira, its produce and 'state of society and commerce'. The work is accompanied by a charming aquatint view of the south view of the island, with the city of Funchal, after Hopkins' original sketch. Not seen at auction in the past twenty-five years. Not in Abbey.
