Details
[CADDY, Lieutenant J.H. Scenery of the Windward & Leeward Islands London: Ackermann & Co., 1837 (watermarked 1836-1837-1850).]
Oblong 2° (340 x 504mm). 12 hand-coloured aquatint plates by J. Harris, Newton Fielding, William Westall, C. Hunt, all after Caddy. (Neat repairs and restoration to blank margins, some light soiling.) Unbound as issued in original green cloth portfolio (rebacked and cornered, ties renewed). Provenance: Edward Marshall (early bookplate).
VERY RARE COMPLETE SET OF THESE ATTRACTIVE VIEWS. Little is known of Lieutenant Caddy of the Royal Engineers, but these fine views aquatinted by some of the greatest engravers of the period all suggest that he was an artist of considerable ability. The lack of definition to the imprint of Abbey's number 8 'Kingstown, St. Vincent's. from Cane-Garden Point', allied with the watermark date of 1850, confirm that this plate is from a later issue of this image. The remaining 11 plates have a uniformity of impression and paper quality (together with two plates watermarked 1836 and 1837 respectively) which suggest that they are all from the original issue. Abbey Travel II, 692; Sabin III,9824.
