Details
NIXON, Frederick R. Sketches in Mauritius. [n.p.], 1848.

Small 2° (290 x 220mm). Lithographic title, dedication to Lady Gomm, hand-coloured lithographic map and 25 lithographic plates by V. Devaux after Nixon. (Occasional very light spotting, touching image in a few plates.) Contemporary half calf gilt (extremities scuffed).

A RARE SERIES OF VIEWS OF MAURITIUS, with accompanying history and description. In his introductory remarks, Nixon makes clear his intention behind the style of his drawings and the technique adopted for their production, 'the chief object sought for was accuracy of outline.' An indication of early ownership appears on the text leaf accompanying the view of the 'Malartic Tomb', where the Latin inscriptions on the sides of the monument have been inscribed in brown ink in a 19th-century hand. Toussaint, A615.
