BURTON, Richard Francis. The Gold Mines of Midian and The Ruined Midianite Cities. A Fortnight's Tour in North-Western Arabia. Second Edition. London: C. Kegan Paul, 1878.
8° (227 x 148mm). Folding map, 32-page publisher's catalogue. Original red cloth gilt with bevelled edges, covers and spine ruled in gilt and black, (soiled, a little worn). Provenance: Alice Bird. (inscription).
SECOND EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR, inscribed 'From the Professor Al-Haj Abdullah [in Arabic] To the Pupil Alice Bird' on half-title. Alice Bird, a member of the London Bohemian set, was the sister of Dr. George Bird and both were old friends of the Arundell family. Alice was a close platonic friend of Burton before and after his marriage, the friendship continued over the years as did Dr. Bird's medical attendance on Burton. He terms this a sequel to his earlier 'Pilgrimage' but it was, in fact, a gold-hunting reconnaissance from Cairo. The Burtons had recently returned from India when Richard heard that the Khedive of Egypt was in need of cash. Burton aspired to digging it out of the Midian desert for him. Along with the small amount of gold he found were evidences of crude oil. The work was proofed, prefaced and prepared for publication by Isabel during his second Midian expedition later the same year. Although a Second Edition and so marked at foot of spine, this copy is in the first edition binding with bevelled edges, gilt-lettered cover and gilt-ruled spine. Penzer p. 95-96. Casada 38.
