RARE: 'In June 1819, on account of his up-to-date personal knowledge of Southern Africa, Burchell was called before a select committee on the Poor Laws in the British House of Commons to advise on the suitability of South Africa for the settlement of British emigrants. In his evidence he recommended the Albany district for this purpose, and doubtless, influenced by him, the British Parliament voted £50,000 to enable the government to assist would-be emigrants' (DSAB). The present work was published shortly afterwards, but was dismissed in the Quarterly Review of November 1819 by a writer believed to be John Barrow. Burchell's reply to this review was included in his Travels in the interior of Southern Africa (1822-1824, see lots 352-353). Cf. Mendelssohn I,p.223 (a reprint of 24pp. published in 'The Pamphleteer' vol.XVII in 1820).
