BAINES, Thomas (1822-1875). The Victoria Falls Zambesi River sketched on the spot (during the journey of J.Chapman & T.Baines. London: Day & Son, Limited, 1865.
Large 2° (558 x 370mm). Tinted lithographic title with large hand-coloured vignette view, 10 tinted lithographic plates finished by hand, drawn on stone by T.Picken, R.M.Bryson, F.Jones and E.Walker, all after Baines and printed by Day & Son, extra-illustrated with two carte-de-visite studio portraits mounted on the front pastedown, of Thomas Baines (with presentation inscription 'To Horace Waller Esq. a remembrance of S. Africa from his friend T. Baines'), and of Sir John Kirk (signed by Kirk, and inscribed by Waller 'Visited the Falls 1860'). (Small neat repairs to blank margins of the title, and the 1st, 2nd and 7th plates.) Original blue cloth blocked in blind, the title blocked in gilt on the upper cover (rebacked, inner hinges repaired).
HAND-COLOURED ISSUE OF BAINES'S MOST IMPORTANT PUBLISHED WORK, PROBABLY FROM THE LIBRARY OF HORACE WALLER. Waller went out to Africa in 1861 as a member of the Universities Mission, working under Bishop Mackenzie (who was in turn being advised by Livingstone). Waller would have met both Kirk and Baines at this time, as they were both to take part in the expedition that Livingstone was preparing for. Tim Jeal notes that Waller later 'became one of [Livingstone's]... greatest friends' (Livingstone London: 1985, p.236). Baines, born in King's Lynn, first arrived in Afica at the Cape Colony in 1842. "From 1848 to 1851 he accompanied the British army in the Kafir war as artist [see lots 389 and 403], and in 1855 joined an expedition which was appointed under Mr. A. Gregory to explore North-west Australia. His energy and skill during this appointment secured for him the special thanks of the colonial government, and in 1858, at the recommendation of the Royal Geographical Society, he was appointed artist to the Zambesi expedition under Livingstone, whom he accompanied as far as Tete in the Portuguese territory. In 1861 he joined Chapman in his expedition from the south-west coast to the Victoria Falls, when, besides making a complete route survey, and collecting much information for the naturalist and man of science, he made a large number of sketches and paintings." [see lots 443-452] (DNB). This work, with its spectacular large scale images, was issued with the plates in both coloured and tinted states. Kennedy B58-68.
