five handcoloured lantern slides, probably by Lawrence Bros., Cape Town, after pictures by Baines [1861-62], three of the wooden mounts titled in ink by Baines, two with printed labels, the slides 110 x 172mm. including mounts, in wooden box addressed in ink by Baines on the sliding lid 'R.White Esq./7 Riches Court/Limestreet/Leadenhall/London/from T Baines.'

Robert White, Grahamstown.
Back in England in 1866, and in need of money, Baines sold all of his paintings (one hundred and twenty seven or so) to his friend the Grahamstown banker Robert White, for £160, and the present lantern slides, after his pictures of the Zambezi expedition of 1861-62, may have been given to White at the same time.
The lantern slides were probably made up by Lawrence Bros. in Cape Town for Baines's two exhibitions and four lectures at the Theatre Royal in 1865.
