STANLEY, Sir Henry Morton (1841-1904). Through the Dark Continent or 462 sources of the Nile around the great lakes of equatorial Africa and down the Livingstone river to the Atlantic ocean. London: William Clowes & Sons for Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1878.
2 volumes, 8° (222 x 140mm). 2 tinted lithographic portraits, 10 maps, printed in two colours with routes marked in red (4 folding, two of these in pockets at the end of each volume), 32 wood-engraved plates, numerous wood-engraved illustrations. (Large folding maps in pockets at end of each volume browned and with tears to folds, outer margins tattered of first map in vol.I and folding map facing p.326 in vol.II.) Original brown cloth, spines and upper covers blocked in gilt and black (recased, inner hinges strengthened, worn). Provenance: Sir Edwin Arnold (1832-1904, author's presentation inscription, dated 8 June 1878).
AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, presented to Edwin Arnold, one of the four dedicatees, who was then chief editor of The Daily Telegraph. The newspaper was directly responsible (with James Gordon Bennett of the New York Herald) for financing Stanley's expedition. Stanley writes on the front free endpaper of vol.I 'To the warm-hearted Champion of the absent traveller who remembers his chivalry & friendship To Edwin Arnold. from. Henry M Stanley June 8th 1878 London'.
