JOYCE, James. Anna Livia Plurabelle--J. JOYCE. Autograph letter signed ('James Joyce') to C.K. Ogden, 28b Campden Grove, Kensington, 8 June 1931, one page, 4to, autograph envelope.
J. JOYCE. 'James Joyce reading "Anna Livia Plurabelle"', manufactured by The Gramophone Co., Ltd., Hayes for The Orthological Institute, Cambridge, [1929]. 302mm diameter, 78rpm gramophone record, printed paper labels on both sides. Contemporary paper sleeve. FIRST PRESSING. JOYCE READING FROM FINNEGANS WAKE. This fragment forms pp.213-216 of Finnegans Wake. Cf. Slocum and Cahoon Joyce p.173, noting that this is the first of the 4 pressings made.
JOYCE'S RECORDING OF ANNA LIVIA PLURABELLE. Joyce asks Ogden to send 'an A.L.P. disc' [the recording of 'Anna Livia Plurabelle'] to Hughes [perhaps Herbert Hughes, editor of The Joyce Book, see lot 711]; also asking that if 'the Guillaume Tell disc you put on' had been given to him by Joyce, he is to 'break it. I wrote to S. [John Sullivan] and got his permission. It is dreadful'.
Ogden was the co-author of The Meaning of Meaning and the inventor of Basic English. For his involvement in the Anna Livia Plurabelle recordings, and his production of a version of the passage in Basic English and other projects with Joyce, see the preceding and following lots. John Sullivan was the Irish tenor whom Joyce championed in the 1930s (see lots 713 and 747). (2)
