Lot Essay

This glamorous scene is instructive. Lamont was a Scot who studied in Paris and was the model for 'the Laird' in George du Maurier's novel Trilby, published in 1894. Du Maurier had been a fellow student, along with Poynter and Whistler. This rather intriguing composition, depicting two observers, looks satirically at the romantic games played out at such society occasions.
