A 19th-Century brass equinoctial compass sundial,
signed on the chapter ring Troughton & Simms, LONDON, in a shaped fishskin-covered case -- 14.6cm. (5¾in.) wide

The chapter ring has a sprung square-section gnomon and is stamped on the upper and inner surfaces with an hour scale IIII-XII, I-VIII with 5-minute subdivisions. The folding latitude arm is stamped for 0-88°, subdivided to 1°. The glazed compass is graduated around the circumference in four quadrants with 1° subdivisions, with a windrose, eight marked compass points, two bubble levels and an edge-bar needle and clamp. The dial is supported on three adjustable screw feet. The triangular wooden case is lined with purple plush and covered in black fishskin, with three brass hooks and eyes.
