Lot Essay

Rock crystal with a delicate network of flaws as seen in this bottle has been variously described as 'seaspray', 'net' or 'cracked ice' crystal. The present bottle has markings similar to other bottles of this group, such as another example from the J & J Collection, illustrated by Moss et. al., The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle, no. 95, but is distinguished by its extremely pale purple colouring. A similar material with net-like markings is known in amethyst and none in rose quartz, suggesting that the faint purplish tinge seen here is in fact a shade of amethyst so pale it appears almost pink.
