Lot Essay

Serpentine is a stone that somewhat resembles nephrite but usually has a soapy appearance. It is also softer than nephrite, although it varies in hardness with different types of the stone. Its colours are also similar to part of the nephrite range, including brown, grey, black, green and a yellowish-green colour which resembles yellow jade. The present lot is by far the most striking and the most even and intense yellow serpentine bottle known. The soft and unctuous surface gives it a distinctive tactile quality. The form is beautifully shaped and finished with an exceptional degree of formal integrity.

Cf. another bottle from this distinctive stone, but carved with goats, sold at Sotheby's London, 6 June 1988, lot 332.
