Circular on four bracket feet, the scalloped upturned rim chased with flutes, the field flat-chased with a border of foliate scrolls, rocaille and trelliswork, the center engraved with a coat-of-arms and motto within an elaborate rococo cartouche, the rim engraved with a portrait, marked on reverse, also with scratchweight 21=12

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Hammer impaling those of another.

A similar salver, with an almost identical chased border, is in the collection of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute and illustrated in Beth Carver Wees, English, Irish & Scottish Silver at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, 1997, cat. no. 321, p. 438.
