Blanche and French artist Henri Fantin-Latour were very close friends. Fantin-Latour, famous for his flower bouquets, advised Blanche at the beginning of his career. (Propos de peintre I, de David à Degas, 1919, p. 10).
Bouquets and still-life paintings are very prominent in Blanche's oeuvre. He was particularly sensitive to the manner in which Fantin depicted the ephemeral beauty of flowers. However, he did not limit himself to the realist and descriptive traditional style of Fantin-Latour. In his bouquets dating from after 1910, such as in the present work, Blanche was most concerned with decorative and colorist effects. He believed that flowers had a certain mysterious quality and individuality that could actually be captured on the canvas.
