A GROUP OF SAMNITE BRONZE ARMOUR
CIRCA 4TH CENTURY B.C.
Comprising a helmet with contoured inverted 'V's above the brow, single horizontal rib below, the crown with slight median ridge and traces of riveted plume holder, an applied notched cord around edge of neck-guard and ear recesses, the cheekpiece attachment plates with wave pattern border, separate cusped hinged cheekpieces, 11½ in. (29.2 cm.) high max.; a muscled cuirass, the naturalistically modelled breastplate with copper nipples, two attachment rings on the shoulders, a riveted broad hinged attachment plate on each side with wave pattern border, traces of iron hinge pin in one, with similar backplate, 15 in. (38.7cm.) high max.; and a pair of full length greaves with naturalistically modelled calf muscles and knees, 16¼ in. (41.4 cm.) high max., all restored, mounted on perspex stand (5)
