Lot Essay

As noted by Klaus Ertz, loc. cit., p. 223, this is a version of a composition sold from the More collection, Brussels, 11 April 1929, lot 199, measuring 49 x 76 cm. On the basis of a photograph in the RKD, Dr. Ertz attributed the staffage in the latter painting to Jan Brueghel I and dated the painting to shortly before 1610, and hypothesised (again on the basis of photographs only) a similar date for the present work. The quality of the present figures would appear to be closer to that of Jan II; however, at that date, the latter was too young to be a participant, suggesting instead a later date, from when Jan II was working in his father's studio before his departure for Italy in 1622.
