Lot Essay

Andrea Procaccini was a pupil of Carlo Maratti and like his master always remained faithful to the Classical tradition that had originated with Raphael. He also collaborated with Maratti on the restoration of Raphael's Stanze in the Vatican. His commissions in Rome were prestigious; including work in St. Peter's and St. John Lateran, as well as for important Roman families such as the Pallavicini, the Imperiali and the Ottoboni. He moved to Spain in 1720 where he was appointed painter of the court; there he fulfilled many important royal commissions.
