Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professoressa Paola Rossi for noting that the painting is related to the Portrait of Cardinal Giovanni Grimani formerly in an English private collection (Christie's, London, 12 December 1980, lot 33, as 'Domenico Tintoretto') and published by Rodolfo Pallucchini as by Jacopo Tintoretto (R. Pallucchini, 'Un nuovo ritratto di Jacopo Tintoretto', Arte Veneta, 1983, pp. 184-7, illustrated). As Rossi suggests, the similitude of the two sitters indicates that the present lot is most likely a portrait of Cardinal Grimani, but at a later stage of his life.
