Lot Essay

The attribution to Carpioni for this hitherto unknown picture has kindly been endorsed by Professor Ugo Ruggeri, to whom we are grateful, on the basis of a transparency. The composition is closely related to a picture of the same subject from a set of the four seasons by Carpioni, last recorded in a private collection, Bergamo (see G.M. Pilo, Carpioni, Venice, 1968, p. 87, fig. 23).
