Lot Essay

Cf. D. Thompson, Coptic Textiles in The Brooklyn Museum, New York, 1971, no. 16, pl. X, which depicts a stag, generally representing the 42nd Psalm in Christian art. "It also appeared occasionally, perhaps symbolically, in contemporary Sasanian decorative arts, in which the convention of showing various animals and birds with flying scarves or ribbons at the neck was common".
